Leichtag Family Foundation Offers Casa de Amparo $2 Million Challenge Grant To Help Build New Casa Kids Campus

City of Carlsbad contributes $330,000 and Supervisor Horn $50,000 toward project

Oceanside, CA (April 28, 2010) — Casa de Amparo, a leader in the treatment and prevention of child abuse, has served the San Diego community for more than 32 years. The organization is currently raising funds to build a new “Casa Kids Campus” to enhance and expand its programs and services for abused and at-risk children. Wells Fargo has offered a loan of $4 million if Casa de Amparo can first raise $4 million by July 1, 2010.

Responding to this need, The Leichtag Family Foundation last week offered a $2 Million Challenge Grant. The City of Carlsbad is also providing $330,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds and County Supervisor Bill Horn directed $50,000 from his discretionary Community Reinvestment Fund in support of the project.

“Casa de Amparo’s mission is strongly aligned with the Leichtag family’s values and we are committed to supporting Casa as it increases its capacity to provide suffering children the critical help they need,” said Jim Farley, Leichtag Family Foundation President and CEO.

“Casa de Amparo provides the only privately-run emergency shelter in San Diego County as well as a wide range of other programs helping children from birth through young adulthood and their families,” stated Frank Boensch of the Housing and Redevelopment Department. “The City of Carlsbad relies on Casa de Amparo for help when a child in our community suffers from abuse or neglect.”

“Casa de Amparo plays a key role in helping at-risk children and parents reinforce family bonds and step away from cycles of abuse into cycles of healthy family relationships,” added Supervisor Horn.

“We want to express our heartfelt thanks to the Leichtag Family Foundation, the City of Carlsbad, Supervisor Horn, Wells Fargo and our generous donors,” said Sharon Delphenich, Casa de Amparo Executive Director. “Casa de Amparo must still raise $1.6 million by July 1, 2010 in order to secure critical loan funding from Wells Fargo. Now, more than ever, we look to the generosity of our supporters, community businesses, organizations and foundations to help us close the gap so we may immediately begin construction of the new Casa Kids Campus to enhance and expand our programs to serve more abused and neglected children. Casa de Amparo will continue its fund-raising efforts throughout construction to pay off the loan and open the Casa Kids Campus debt-free as we were able to do with the Family Services and Hayward Child Development Center which opened in 2007.”
