Child Abuse Facts
  1. Approximately 10,000 substantiated cases of child abuse are reported in San Diego County annually.
  2. San Diego County’s child abuse incident rate is higher than the national average.
  3. About 75,000 calls of suspected abuse come into San Diego’s Child Abuse Hotline annually.
  4. About 7,500 children live in foster care each year in San Diego County as a result of abuse, abandonment or neglect.
  5. Each day, at least three children die as a result of child abuse at home in the U.S.
  6. Child abuse cuts across all socio-economic groups, races and religions.
  7. United Way San Diego has selected child abuse as one of three focus areas this year, because this issue is considered one of our community’s most pressing problems.
  8. Many people who abuse or neglect are ordinary people whose stressors overwhelm their coping skills.
  9. More than 40% of young adults who leave the foster care system at age 18 will become homeless, incarcerated or dependent on public assistance.

290 Families

AND PROVIDED:
5,793 nights of emergency shelter
5,945 days of therapeutic preschool and childcare
849 supervised visits for parents and children seeking reunification
7,369 days of transitional housing and support
9,300 hours of clinical support (counseling)
Gifts for over 200 foster children during our holiday gift drive
